Paintings by Allison Gordin

"How can it be expressed, this moment! The erotic glance of a lover, the sadness of loss. Hands say so much, the way a person holds a cigarette; smoke curling into the blackness. At this moment she's so beautiful, but what lies in the shadows? Why does his arm reach into the void? Are hands as expressive as the eyes? I don't know, but I want to explore the idea. Hidden or in the foreground, in the shadows, or staring at you with a million possibilities. Inviting, expressing grief, remorse, or just plain self absorption. The human face and hands are so fascinating to me, compelling and irresistible.

Painting is much like these things to me. I paint from photographs. I like to interpret the moment captured in the seconds with a camera and then... after sharing this intensity of communication with another. The solitary confinement of the studio, just the painting and the artist. Can I capture the emotion, the intimacy of that moment, just what it is that makes that person so intriguing. I will try. Oils seem to offer the most flexibility. They seem the most malleable to my abilities. Oils are sensual in a way that most mediums are not, the scent of linseed oil, turpentine and the various glazes. Say so much to us, our eyes, nose, touching. Yes, the touch of the paint on the skin. It can be so reminiscent of the organic humanity of the person being painted."

The Age of Ishtar

New Works in Pyrography and Clay by Amber Chambers

Utilizing reclaimed sinker cypress and cedar as the primary medium, this collection reflects upon the interaction between our subconscious and perception. By interweaving surreal figures and traditional imagery I seek to evoke imagination and curiosity. Each surface is addressed intuitively allowing generated energy of the underlying wood grain to inform the narrative. Reflecting on perception this exhibition engages the viewer with a sense of optimism and a sense of humor.

Like many young Americans immersed in a nation of immense ethnic diversity, generations away from our immigrant ancestors, and displaced from a legacy of tradition, I’ve drawn inspiration from cultures all over the globe. As the internet continues to increase our awareness, personal interests become a surrogate for ethnographic authenticity[1]. While my interest in Asia has served to shape my aesthetic, this body of work embodies a melting pot of cultures which I have experienced and admired. Embracing the blurring boundaries of current artistic trends, I intend to encourage international curiosity through the evolution of narratives. How stories traveling across trade routes and being changed by the tellers transformed narratives such as Hanuman into Goku. Through my work I would like to raise discussion about how our social identities can be shaped by the coalescing of global communities.

My Mom thinks my work has really improved too

My Mom thinks my work has really improved too is the second round of a show that illustrates the interesting connections between childhood and adulthood in art. Featuring the works of Angela Martin Berry, Marianne Desmarais, Jeannie Detweiler, Ben Fox-McCord, Sarah Gramelspacher, Margaret Hull, Bruce Humphries, Natalie McLaurin, Yuka Petz, Bob Snead, Shelby Stoor, Bob Tannen, Gin Taylor, and Jessica Vogel.

Abdi Farah - The Rams

Staple Goods is pleased to present the debut New Orleans show of Bravo Channel's Season 1 winner of Work of Art: The Next Great Artist, Abdi Farah. Abdi is completing a one-year residency in the city.

As a former athlete, Abdi Farah’s work for the past few seasons has been inspired by the rhythms, mechanics, ceremony, and accoutrements of sports. Initially interested in the portraits of young football players, he steadily became more inspired by the equipment, the uniforms, and the props of the game. Gashed helmets and dented facemasks bearing record of past battles; the shoulder pads, cleats, and grip-enhancing gloves with their correspondence to the developing teenage bodies they silhouette; the meticulously designed training equipment -- all embody the never-ending story of humanity’s reliance upon technology to maximize one’s potential and gain advantage over one’s adversaries.

Opening Reception: Saturday, May 11th, 6-9pm

Show Closes:  Sunday, June 2
