The Photography of Jacko Vassilev

Scott Edwards Gallery is honored to present The Photography of Jacko Vassilev. Born in Bulgaria in 1951, Jacko lived most of his life under strict Communist Totalitarianism. In a country where being a photographer made you a possible propagandist against the government, Jacko was very familiar with being arrested, questioned and even being put in a work camp for a year of his life because of his camera. The photo of a handless "Professional Photographer" shows Jacko's possible fate if discovered showing the "bad side" of the government and the impoverished lives of its people. In spite of these conditions, Jacko is able to show a timeless and compelling portraits of Bulgarian people where their true human spirit shows through even under the harshest of conditions.

In this exhibition, Jacko will be offering limited edition silver gelatin 12x16's and 8x10's on "lost" Bulgarian Fohar Stock. All prints were created in Bulgaria under clandestine conditions in Jacko's basement darkroom. Jacko stole chemicals and traded rations for paper to create this series of over 50 images. Each image is limited to 50 per size.

Jacko's work is part of the permanent collections of the International Center of Photography in New York, the European Center of Photography in Paris, and many other museums worldwide.

Due to health issues, Jacko Vassilev will not be attending the Opening Reception or any dates during the Exhibition.

Limited Signed copies of his very rare, French published book, "The Bulgarians" will be available.

Paintings by Allison Gordin

"How can it be expressed, this moment! The erotic glance of a lover, the sadness of loss. Hands say so much, the way a person holds a cigarette; smoke curling into the blackness. At this moment she's so beautiful, but what lies in the shadows? Why does his arm reach into the void? Are hands as expressive as the eyes? I don't know, but I want to explore the idea. Hidden or in the foreground, in the shadows, or staring at you with a million possibilities. Inviting, expressing grief, remorse, or just plain self absorption. The human face and hands are so fascinating to me, compelling and irresistible.

Painting is much like these things to me. I paint from photographs. I like to interpret the moment captured in the seconds with a camera and then... after sharing this intensity of communication with another. The solitary confinement of the studio, just the painting and the artist. Can I capture the emotion, the intimacy of that moment, just what it is that makes that person so intriguing. I will try. Oils seem to offer the most flexibility. They seem the most malleable to my abilities. Oils are sensual in a way that most mediums are not, the scent of linseed oil, turpentine and the various glazes. Say so much to us, our eyes, nose, touching. Yes, the touch of the paint on the skin. It can be so reminiscent of the organic humanity of the person being painted."

City Stories/ Wilderness Dreams: New works in Clay and Wood by Amber Chambers

"Utilizing both clay and wood as a surface to draw on, this new collection reflects upon the dichotomy of a desire to be part of community and the unexplainable allure of wild solitude. Juxtaposing ceramic functional forms with reclaimed asymmetrical natural wood panels, I seek to weave a narrative about modern interaction, loss, and loneliness. While modern technology has brought civilization into an era of global awareness, it has also served to isolate and dehumanize communication. These images are a product of reflection upon my own experiences in seeking to define my role in the suburban sprawl while entertaining secret dreams of retreating to a state of feral hermitage." - Amber Chambers

Attachments: New Work by Kathy Rodriguez

The small-scale oil paintings and gouache/graphite drawings included in this exhibition explore the artist’s personal, physical, and emotional relationships with her own self and with other human beings. Using abstraction, Rodriguez references figures or bodies that literally adhere to the surface of the painting or drawing, much like bacteria and viruses invade and adhere to the body and blossom into lesions, or people adhere to one another in sometimes-dangerous ways.
